Solo performer: Hal Russell (vocals, soprano & tenor saxophones, trumpet, musette, vibraphone, bass marimba, drums, congas, gong, percussion, bells).
Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in May 1992. Includes liner notes by Steve Lake.
The late Hal Russell was a sort of a latter-day Mezz Mezzrow, a white hipster musician thoroughly immersed in the black idiom of his time. His solo tour-de-force, HAL BELLS, a tribute to Albert Ayler (even though it features a track dedicated to Kenny G!), is also a free-jazz masterpiece. Given all the squawking, there's a curiously studied elegance on display here. Every one of these tracks is a polished piece of abstract sound sculpture with an overall spatial depth, especially noteworthy since these are all overdubs. As for the playing itself, Russell makes a great one-man band--the fluid drumming, percussion, and mallet work he lays down in support of all the free blowing goes right up to the precipice and then back again.
