Personnel: Steve Swallow (electric bass); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Tom Harrell (trumpet, flugelhorn); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Jack DeJohnette (drums).
Any album that comes charging out of the gate with a tune called "Bite Your Grandmother" is going to throw some loopy curve balls, and REAL BOOK is indeed a knockout. Bass player Swallow is joined by Jack DeJohnette (drums), Mulgrew Miller (piano), Tom Harrell (trumpet), and Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone). Swallow and DeJohnette are like a crazy electric train, snaking through the landscape of the bass player's ten tunes.
The album's title plays off the concept of the "fakebook," a collection of standards frequently found on the stands of pick-up musicians, and this set evokes the feeling of the familiar. From the bluesy "Second Hand Motion" to the Caribbean-inflected "Outfits" and the balladry of "Wrong Together," "Willow," and "Better Times," REAL BOOK touches all main bases. But the music does so on the musicians' own terms, with great inventive flair and a sense of fun.

Musician (10/94, p.86) - "...REAL BOOK captures the intimate feeling of a thousand sweaty basement jams, with all the ease, energy and risk-taking that scenario implies....Steve Swallow has made one of the more vibrant and interesting jazz recordings of 1994...."
