Abercrombie's exemplary guitar and compositional skills, either solo or in ensemble, have long been a documented fact. On WHILE WE'RE YOUNG, he further proves that he continues to have valid and interesting things to say. Hammond organist Dan Wall and percussionist Adam Nussbaum join him here. And if there is one admirable thing to note about Abercrombie, it is that he gives a good deal of leeway to both Wall and Nussbaum, often letting Wall's piercing organ dance nimbly amongst the delicate cymbal and snare drum work.
All three band members also took part in the writing of WHILE WE'RE YOUNG, making for a most appealing session. The disc alternates between lazy fusion ("Rain Forest," "Stormz") and some more traditionally styled numbers ("Scomotion"). Throughout the entire affair, Abercrombie keeps things in fluid motion--via an elegiac wash of near-symphonic stylings or an achingly plucked movement or two. WHILE WE'RE YOUNG is again demonstrative of Abercrombie's adroit abilities. He is one who keeps a foot in jazz structure and the other in improv, moving effortlessly between a variety of moods and feelings. Nice.
