THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION gathers 17 tracks by jazzman Louis Jordan.
Though many music fans don't realize it, alto saxophonist/singer Louis Jordan was one of the founding fathers of both rhythm & blues and subsequently rock & roll. Jordan was a renegade from the Swing era, who left the popular Chick Webb Orchestra (featuring singer Ella Fitzgerald) to start his own band. His "formula" was for his band to swing fast and hard while increasing and emphasizing the blues content. Jordan, meanwhile, always the irreverent hipster, sang audacious but good-natured songs of romance and alcohol-assisted partying. ESSENTIAL COLLECTION contains many of his biggest hits in this style from the 1940s and early '50s.

Q (9/01, p.133) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Even those with only a passing interest in R&B can't fail to be impressed by Jordan's unique way with a jive vocal, his forceful, booting sax-attacks and the tight surround sound afforded by his Tympany Five..."
