Every Day I Have the Blues is a thumbnail sketch of the blues, beginning at the point where it went urban and electric. Included are classic tracks by Muddy Waters ("The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock & Roll"), Otis Spann ("Got My Mojo Workin'"), and John Lee Hooker ("Boom Boom"). Houston's Lightnin' Hopkins is represented by "Lightnin's Boogie." Howlin' Wolf's "Little Red Rooster" is also collected here, the perfect example of a rural song in an urban setting. The sequence is a bit baffling, however, with Elmore James' classic "Dust My Broom" bumping up against Jeff Healey's version of a John Hiatt tune, "Confidence Man," and perhaps the history lesson would have made a lot more sense here if the songs had been arranged chronologically. Can't fault the tune selection, but with 15 tracks, this is far too short to be anything but a drive-by glimpse of modern blues. ~ Steve Leggett
