Listening to this CD, which features Chester Atkins (as he was then known) accompanying Mother Maybelle Carter and the Carter Sisters, one gets an uncanny sense of dj vu -- not with Chet Atkins' work, as such, but, rather, with those Everly family broadcasts on the Everly Brothers' Roots album, featuring Ike Everly. Except here, instead of Don and Phil harmonizing, it's the Carter Sisters -- their singing shares the spotlight with his crisp, nimble-fingered playing, and the result is a rousing mix of country, bluegrass, gospel, and novelty tunes preserved mostly on transcription discs. The audio, preserved from surviving platters (which weren't supposed to survive), varies somewhat in quality, but the producers have done a more than fair job of making it consistent and rewarding. And fans who only know him in terms of his solo recordings may be surprised to heard Atkins as a very busy accompanist. ~ Bruce Eder
