Clarinetist and mandolin player Andy Statman shows off his chops on the latter on EAST FLATBUSH BLUES, an album that sticks primarily to bluegrass-oriented American roots music. Statman is joined by a crack rhythm section of bass and drums, leaving plenty of room for Statman to burn up the fretboard on his mandolin. (The two Bill Monroe covers that open the album, "Rawhide" and "Blue Grass Stomp," are cases in point.) There are a few traditional tunes here--including "Old Joe Clark," for which Statman breaks out his clarinet--but the disc is composed primarily of Statman's fine originals

  • Critic Reviews
Dirty Linen (p.48) - "EAST FLATBUSH BLUES is Statman's first straight bluegrass instrumental album in many years, and he shows dramatically that he has lost none of his mandolin chops..."
