The curse of Carlene Carter's career is that every review brings up her heritage--granddaughter of Mother Maybelle, daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith, stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, half-sister of Roseanne Cash, ex-wife of Nick Lowe--before discussing her own (innumerable) qualifications. In her on-again, off-again career--three albums in the late '70s, three in the early '90s--Carter has proven herself time and again as one of the most fiercely talented country-rockers around.
I FELL IN LOVE, the first of those '90s albums, is a masterpiece of the style, mixing Sun-style rockabilly ("One Love"), British Invasion pop ("Come On Back"), accordion-led honky-tonk ("Goodnight Dallas") and, most affectingly, Carter Family-style bluegrass on the beautiful homage to her grandmother, "Me and the Wildwood Rose." Remarkably, the different styles blend as if they're one. I FELL IN LOVE is an absolute stunner.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (11/1/90) - 3.5 Stars - Good "...her first effort in six years, Carter has found herself...with more range, and style, than she's ever shown before."
Stereo Review (11/90) - "Carter, who possesses a perfect and natural rockabilly vocal lilt, alternatively delights, surprises, reaffirms her independent musical stance, and reworks her family's musical legacy with songs of integrity, heart, and style, much of it diverse and wide-ranging". Entertainment Weekly - A
