The ache in Caroline Herring's voice evokes blue-veined mountains, red soil, box socials, and Sunday porch-singing, and she doesn't shy away from gritty lyrical matter, like the true story of a mother who drowns her children, or the tarnished history of slavery in her native south. In a word, she is authentic, a true proponent of the Americana form. This 2008 release, her third, mines all the varieties of trad folk, including tangy country-blues and murder ballads. The artist's lovely voice and acoustic guitar playing are supplemented by violins, steel guitar, and mandolin, arranged tastefully around the simple but haunting songs.

  • Critic Reviews
Dirty Linen (p.43) - "Herring's vocals are clear and lovely, evoking the classic voices of Baez, Collins, and Mitchell, yet grounded in the country dirt of Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, and Eliza Gilkyson."
No Depression (p.71) - "[I]nsightful, evocative writing is the common denominator of LANTANA, a compelling acoustic album rooted in the complexities of women's lives, especially women of the south."
