Dave Alvin's third album documents his continued growth as a gifted songwriter (the evidence of which can be heard in his first band, The Blasters) and the development of his skill as a vocalist of increasing breadth and nuance. His tales of working class struggles are always rich with dignity, and grace pervades even the most downtrodden circumstances. The gritty reality of Alvin's songs is given perfect shape by his sympathetic accompaniment. He covers a musical terrain similar to Bruce Springsteen's, but favors subtle characterizations over anthemic gestures. This album, along with its two successors (KING OF CALIFORNIA and INTERSTATE CITY), are perfect entry points into this man's impressive catalog. Dave Alvin is truly an American treasure.
