The concept of a "supergroup" is usually regarded with great anticipation, usually followed by disappointment. Many are excited by the prospect of several impressive performers who are established in their own right getting together, yet often egos clash, opportunities are missed, and the end result is less than the sum of its parts. This is thankfully not the case with this album, where all the participants remember that the song is the important thing. The Rice brothers are among the finest players in both bluegrass and "new acoustic music" (a fusion of bluegrass and jazz); Chris Hillman was a founding member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Desert Rose Band; and Herb Pedersen has played with the Dillards, Jerry Garcia, and John Denver, among others.
This is a magnificent acoustic affair, with a definite bluegrass orientation, full of warm, close, high-lonesome harmonies and impeccable musicianship that draws attention to the tune, not to itself. This quartet makes Garcia's "Friend of the Devil" and Emmylou Harris's "One of These Days" their own, and "Moonshine" gives their instrumental a chance to shine. Fans of contemporary bluegrass and folk: this is the Real Deal.
Critic Reviews
Q (3/00, pp.106-8) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...There's no denying the quality of the acoustic, country-inclined material created here with Hillman contributing 4 impressive new songs..."
Mojo (Publisher) (2/00, p.101) - "...with 3 lead vocalists, all equally adept at close-harmony singing, and some impressive interplay between banjo, mandolin, fiddle and dobro, there are moments here to be treasured by anyone who still loves to hear the old folks having a good time."
