As an ad-man might say, "if you buy only one Jerry Douglas record this year, make it this one." If you buy two, make sure the other one is Strength in Numbers' THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS. SKIP, HOP AND WOBBLE may be the finest recording Douglas has been involved with to date. Considering the mind-boggling number of records he has made--not only as a Nashville sideman and/or producer but as a leader or sideman on countless "non-commercial" bluegrass, newgrass, and "new acoustic" releases--that's saying a lot.
This is a genuine trio recording. Douglas, Russ Barenberg, and Edgar Meyer are all at the top of their game as players and composers. Like THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS, which also included Douglas and Meyer, the beauty of this project lies in the participants' capacity to transcend mere prowess and individual reputation and come up with something truly collaborative. Naturally, there are wicked chops on display--but rarely as an end unto themselves. This is also a profoundly lyrical and reflective record, but the tautness of the spare instrumentation insures that the mood never lapses from reverie into maudlin noodling.
Critic Reviews
Musician (6/94, p.86) - "...this chops galore string trio understands the power of pith...their compositions seem to wince at the limits of bluegrass; measures are crammed with nifty improvs, though melodies are never left in the dust...."
