    Autechre: Sean Booth, Rob Brown.
Technology-driven music has never scaled such impossible peaks of abstraction as at the hands of U.K.-based electronica pioneers Autechre. Master builders of a parallel universe of sound, the duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown have, since the early `90s, crafted their singular take on hard-boiled signal processing and waywardly alien beat programming to the delight of IDM aficionados everywhere. While each of Ae's albums since the monumental TRI REPETAE (1996) has become progressively more labyrinthine--characterized by endlessly refracted, splintered beats folding into each other--their 2003 release, DRAFT 7.30, represents a return to earlier, more earthbound efforts, while asserting their bracingly unadulterated post-human aesthetic. Even as the gloriously rumpled concatenations of rhythm and noise suggest music at the brink of collapse, tracks such as "V-Proc" reveal a rounded bass undertow that recalls hip-hop instrumentals being voiced by misfiring microprocessors. Meanwhile, the becalming ambience of "Reniform Puls" finds its nearest antecedent in the pastoral synth melancholia of Ae's classic second album, AMBER (1995).

  • Critic Reviews
Uncut (5/03, p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Autechre's new album sees Sean Booth and Rob Brown reconnect with humanity....[With] poignant harmonies battling against oblique but splintering beats..."
Magnet (4/03, p.83) - "...Sean Booth and Rob Brown continue to craft sharply detailed electronic pieces that prick up the ears....The allusion to ancient rhythms makes the futuristic DRAFT 7.30 a more interesting place..."
The Wire (4/03, p.46) - "...DRAFT 7.30 is a feast of buried treasure, a flickerframe parade which continually offers up magical fragments of sound, revelatory and transitory in equal measure..."
Mojo (Publisher) (3/03, p.109) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...DRAFT 7.30 arrives with their signature stock of glitches, thrums and collapsed beats all present and correct....Mesmerising stuff..."
