On MOVEMENT IN STILL LIFE, producer/programmer/mastermind BT presents the accessible face of electronica. Like DJ Rap or Prodigy, he merges electronics with pop and comes up with an eclectic, radio-friendly album that should do more to advance the genre's cause than ten Warp label compilations.
Amid skittering techno breakbeats, modified house rhythms, semi-ambient sweeps, and canny sampling, BT deploys catchy choruses, rapping, and some rock-flavored arrangements. Soft female vocals float soothingly above the ethereal "Dreaming," and a couple of the cuts here could pass for tech-savvy alt-rock, with guitars and vocals aplenty. Hardcore techno fans may dismiss STILL LIFE for pandering to the masses, but those masses will find BT's album a useful entry into the world of electronic pop.
Critic Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (7/7/00, pp.130-1) - "...Romps in as many musical playgrounds as he can....BT may be more compiler than visionary, but compilations rarely sound this engaging." - Rating: A-
Mixmag (6/00, p.169) - "...We've been banging on about it for ages and finally this breaktrance wonder gets a re-release with a CD of remixes..."
CMJ (6/12/00, p.23) - "...An eclectic, and entertaining musical statement from an evolving artist obviously not satisfied by simply retracing paths already worn."
