Increasingly, background and nationality do not dictate the style of music an artist embraces or excels at. For example, George Harrison and John McLaughlin both proved that they could develop a deep understanding of Indian music. Cellist Hans Christian and singer Kim Waters are two more cases in point.
Together, under the appellation Rasa, this duo creates music that draws almost entirely on the devotional music of India. Most of all, IN CONCERT speaks volumes for Christian and Waters's ability to capture the essence of the bhajan (a Hindu song of worship.) The duo certainly understands the droning qualities of this music, including the modal requirements and the use of microtonal intervals. Moreover, Waters's silky voice and dramatic elocution makes this album soar with great spiritual power. Synching up to electronic drum loops, Christian and Waters contemplate Vishnu on such songs as "Sri Rupa Manjari" and "Gopinatha." Other selections "Hari Haraye" and "Arati" use less electronics and therefore sound more traditional. For Westerners, IN CONCERT just may be the perfect entre into the music of the Indian subcontinent.
