  • Oscar-nominated WALK THE LINE star Joaquin Phoenix announces that he's retiring from acting to launch a hip-hop career as his brother-in-law Casey Affleck captures the curious transition on camera in the film some are labeling an elaborate Andy Kaufman-style prank. In the fall of 2008, Phoenix shocked his fans with the announcement that he would no longer be appearing in features, but instead trying his hand in the music business. In the wake of a particularly bizarre appearance on the LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, everyone began to wonder if the eccentric actor had finally fallen off the deep end. In this film, Affleck follows Phoenix as he attempts to convince Sean "Diddy" Combs to produce his debut album, and responds to a request by Ben Stiller to appear in director Noah Baumbach's GREENBERG with casual indifference.

3 stars out of 4 -- "It documents a train wreck....A train that flies off the tracks and tumbles into the abyss."
    Chicago Sun-Times

"[I]t's a grimier version of BORAT, an interactive one in which the audience acts as the squirming dupe trying to judge how to respond to the questionable reality of the experience....Riveting..." -- Grade: B
    A.V. Club

"[An] energetic directorial debut....The fact that an audience can watch the film to the end and not be completely sure where reality ends and playtime begins is a tribute to Affleck's skills at mimicking documentary tropes..."
    Hollywood Reporter

"[I]f it all is make believe, then one must applaud Phoenix's Andy Kaufman-like transformation, and his ability to stay in character for close to a year and a half."

4 stars out of 5 -- "[B]rilliant, often hilarious....The film is a riveting piece of cinematic theater that satirizes artistic pretension and celebrity culture."
    Box Office

"Affleck uses Phoenix's descent to forge a riveting -- and, in its way, cautionary -- case study of a celebrity ragingly addicted to his own psychodrama." -- Grade: A-
    Entertainment Weekly

"[A] riveting experiment....It'll knock you sideways..."
    Rolling Stone
