  • This look at the vast divide between Brazil's rich and poor is seen through the interconnected lives of two boyhood friends: Miguel, who becomes a jaded politician; and Jorge, an imprisoned, though still powerful, Rio drug lord. Cutting between different periods in their lives--their boyhood in the 1950s, political repression in the 1970s, and the emergence of a democracy in the 1990s--the film offers a poignant canvas on which to tell this personal story. Director Lucia Murat co-wrote the film with novelist Paulo Lins, whose novel was the basis for the film CITY OF GOD.
