  • The film was screened in Washington, D.C., in April 1977 but was never officially released. Frank Capra Jr. served as producer of this retelling of MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, the classic that was directed by his father. Estimated budget: $5.5 million, most of it from Tom Laughlin himself, who nearly went bankrupt at the time. In 1986, Laughlin began making THE RETURN OF BILLY JACK, but the film was never completed because of financial problems. Laughlin went on to write a number of nonfiction books about cancer and Jungian philosophy, and he ran for president as well in 1991. After pulling out of the race, he still finished sixth in the New Hampshire Democratic primary.
