  • Like LOST IN TRANSLATION, the thriller STRATOSPHERE GIRL concerns a Westerner set adrift in the alien environment of Tokyo. Angela is a Dutch girl obsessed with Japanese culture, particularly manga comics. When charismatic DJ Yamamoto invites her to Tokyo, she takes up his offer and moves there, finding work as a hostess. As she slowly finds the city and culture she was enamored of more and more disaffecting, her manga drawings seem to take on a life of her own. Desiring to take her artwork to the next level, she becomes entangled with underground elements in the city, putting herself in great danger. STRATOSPHERE GIRL's oblique, European art-house storytelling is combined with a dreamlike aesthetic depicting a unique world city.
