Trad folk maven Carolyn Hester was an important part of the early-1960s Greenwich Village scene that nurtured Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and a host of household names. Sticking with traditional songs, rather than writing her own, was her stock in trade. However, as the '60s progessed, Hester took a detour into psychedelic-tinged folk-rock with her band the Carolyn Hester Coalition. Dressed up as she is in studio finery, she still shines most on the traditional and traditional-sounding songs like "St. James Infirmary," "The Beadmaker," and "Sir Robert the Lost Knight." The only real misstep is a rocked-up version of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," but, hey, it was the '60s.
