Anyone who was intrigued by Six Strings North of the Border, the Borealis label's compilation of instrumental pieces by Canadian acoustic guitarists, will be even more thrilled with the second volume in what will now hopefully be a series, which features such stalwarts of the Canadian roots music scene as Terry Tufts, Dave MacIsaac, and David Rogers, as well as young up-and-comers like Kristen Sweetland and Jon Park Wheeler. The stylistic variety on offer here is quite impressive: Tufts opens the proceedings with an amazing display of bottleneck guitar technique, and he is immediately followed by the Marc Atkinson Trio, which gives a theme of Frederic Chopin the Django Reinhardt treatment to gorgeous (and jaw-droppingly virtuosic) effect. Elsewhere, David Rogers plays a smooth and sweet arrangement of the "Dallas Rag," James Cohen plays one of his typically Spanish-flavored compositions, David MacIsaac delivers a lovely traditional fiddle tune with piano accompaniment in the traditional Cape Breton style, and erstwhile classical guitarist Bob MacLean plays a heartstoppingly lovely steel-string arrangement of the Irish song "Rose of Allendale." There's not a weak track to be found anywhere on this album. Strongly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
