This surprisingly non-ironic (for John Prine) set of standard pop songs finds the deep-voiced singer trading sentimental lines with bluegrass favorite Mac Wiseman. The songs ("Old Cape Cod," "Pistol Packin' Mama") are cornball but fun, and the two singers--joined by the famed Grand Ole Opry backing vocalists Carol Lee Singers--sound like two friends having a great time reliving the songs of their respective childhoods.

  • Critic Reviews
Dirty Linen (p.73) - "[L]istening to recordings of 'The Blue Side of Lonesome' and 'I Love You Because' is more like gathering in someone's living room to hear a couple of old friends revisit beloved songs."
No Depression (pp.79-80) - "The songs are certainly first rate....And the instrumentalists are top-notch....An amiable picking party that evokes placid Sunday picnics..."
