When your parents are Richard and Linda Thompson, the pressure to release a classic debut album is unreasonably high. Although this set of engaging folk-pop tunes does not reach classic status, it demonstrates an undeniable ear for melody and strong arrangements, and displays Thompson's appealingly earnest vocals. Joe Henry proves a sympathetic producer, creating space and depth for Thompson's spare rocking.

Rolling Stone (10/12/00, p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...[His] melodies penetrate slowly, but the finest of them linger....producer Joe Henry manages to find variety in [his] minimalist sound..."
Q (1/01, p.116) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...This laidback, Joe Henry-produced debut album is certainly music to drive by, rather than slash wrists to....evoking the adjective 'breezy'."
CMJ (9/18/00, p.31) - "...Gorgeous....earthy, expressive vocals and meaningful songwriting."
Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.100) - "...Elegant, melodic country rock given just enough crunch..."
