Due to the vast history of folk music around the globe, calling this album The Definitive Folk Collection seems quite goofy and even a bit self-righteous. However, Highpoint Records did put together a nice 17-track set of contemporary British folk culled from the remarkable Topic Records label. Topic might best be considered the British equivalent to Smithsonian Folkways, but where Smithsonian's contemporary catalog often falls short of the mark, Topic's is a fulfilling and haunting listen that is well represented here. Reflecting a deep knowledge of and loyalty to traditional music, musicians like June Tabor, Colin Reid, and Eliza Carthy truly serve as a bridge between modern music and traditional folk music. All three of those artists are represented here, along with the likes of Martin Simpson, Waterson:Carthy, John Tams, Brass Monkey, and several others who perform the same task of stretching the genre out in every direction to carry over to a new generation of traditional music without compromising current ideas. Highpoint did a bang-up job putting this assemblage together, but just a terrible job in the marketing via packaging that tells the customer little about what is collected inside -- instead inviting the customer to the website for information. Still, The Definitive Folk Collection is a fantastic place to start exploring the contemporary British folk scene well documented by Topic Records. ~ Gregory McIntosh
