Marcello Mastroianni stars a modern aristocrat who begins a life of fabrication and fantasy after he falls from a horse. Now believing himself to be Henry IV, Emperor of the Roman Empire. A series of friends join him, reveling in his fantasy as they all dress in costumes and assume the roles of historical figures.
