  • Acclaimed French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier directs this World War II epic about collaboration and resistance in the French film industry during the German occupation. Set in 1940s Paris, SAFE CONDUCT explores the moral conflicts faced by artists under the fascist Vichy regime through the real-life stories of two individuals: scriptwriter Jean Aurenche (Denis Podalydes) and director Jean Devaivre (Jacques Gamblin). While Aurenche spends his time evading the Nazis' attempts to employ him, Devaivre works for the German-run Continental Films as a cover for his role in the French Resistance, subtly incorporating subversive messages into his work. Like Francois Truffaut's THE LAST METRO, Tavernier's thought-provoking film raises profound questions about the role of art during wartime.

  • Critic Reviews
"...Engrossing....At once intimate drama and stirring historical epic, the film is loaded with suspense....[A] richly detailed and shrewdly observed account of grace under pressure..."

"...Tavernier shows us, in more ways than one, that le cinema de qualite lives on..."
    Sight and Sound

"...Tavernier takes great delight in moments of high drama and in abstraction..."
    Film Comment

"...A moving tribute to the ingenuity and courage of those real-life film-makers to whom LAISSEZ-PASSER is dedicated..."
    Total Film

"...Tavernier is interested in his characters not in terms of the cinema they produced but because of the conditions they survived, and the decisions they made....What Tavernier does here is celebrate filmmakers who did the best they could under the circumstances...."
