Ariadne Auf Naxos [DVD] [2004] [Region 1]

ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, based on a work my Moliere and composed by Richard Strauss, draws in viewers to its opera within an opera, hosted by a nouveau riche man who demands a spectacular evening of entertainment for his guests, which includes fireworks and both a comic and tragic opera. As the opera company prepares to take the stage, the "gentilhomme" becomes worried about fitting in all the events, and orders both operas to be staged together. The ensuing chaos finds the tragic figure of Ariadne (Susan Anthony) constantly interrupted by comedians, providing sharp commentary on the distinctions between serious and comic operas.

Directed by Marco Arturo Marelli and conducted by Colin Davis, this Semperoper Dresden production makes clear the opera's setting, keeping the action within the confines of the mansion, and including guests milling about, characters who generally remain only implied in other productions. The production also features awe-inspiring lighting effects that mimic the fireworks and stellar performances by Anthony, Iride Martinez as Zerbinetta, and Sophie Koch as the Composer.
