  • The documentaries in this two-pack explore very different - but equally controversial - historical figures who experienced untimely deaths. First on the bill is Philo Bregstein's Dutch-produced film WHOEVER SAYS THE TRUTH SHALL DIE (1981), on the life of Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-75) - which ended with the production and release of his scandalous feature SALO, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM. According to news reports, Pasolini was slain by his 17-year-old male lover, who ran over the filmmaker several times with the director's own Alfa Romeo. Bregstein calls this account into question, however, and suggests that a conspiracy led to Pasolini's death. In the process, the director interpolates newly-shot interviews with such figures as Bernardo Bertolucci and Laura Betti. Next on the bill is director Alan Moorman's 1974 documentary THE UNQUIET DEATH OF JULIUS AND ETHEL ROSENBERG, which investigates the events that led up to what was arguably the most controversial federally-sanctioned homicide in modern history - the execution of the two titular spies, on June 19, 1953. The film includes interviews with such experts as jurors, FBI agents, and Rosenberg family members - many of whom have since passed on.
