Review: Starts slow and quiet, but by the end, you will be crying. If you love dogs, you'll laugh, but the real theme of the movie is about love, and loss, grieving and healing.
Peter O'Toole at his feisty best as a grumpy old man who can hardly be bothered by the death of his son and then his wife. Jeremy Northam as the son who, struggling to deal with his difficult father, discovers the amazing Dean Spanley (Sam Neill), a cleric with a hankering for Imperial Tokai, and who recalls amazingly funny--and poignant--memories when he hits his second glass. Bryan Brown as the rascally procurer Wrather.
BTW, it's even better with a second viewing. Then you see all the little hints and foreshadowing that build to the satisfying ending.
A stellar cast, too, all providing wonderful performances.
