North Carolina trio Southern Culture on the Skids has created an instantly-addictive high-octane mix of raucous rockabilly, R&B, surf, and punk influences that is unique and wildly exciting. Bracketed by the swinging, two-part "For Lovers Only," singer-guitarist Rick Miller's knowing, sly lyrics examine the subtleties of rural Southern culture, including such unapologetic anthems as "Biscuit Eater," the delirious "Barnyard Ballbuster," and "Daddy Was A Preacher But Mama Was A Go-Go Girl."
In less skillful hands, these lyrical preoccupations might seem like heavy-handed satire or mean-spirited attacks. But Miller, bassist/organist Mary Huff, and drummer David Hartman obviously know and respect the region and its people. The songs are humorous celebrations of, as the brilliant band name suggests, a vanishing culture. More importantly, this album really smokes.
