This CD-DVD package combines Overkill's 14th studio album (15th by the band's own count, which includes their eponymous EP), 2007's Immortalis, with a live concert featuring their appearance at Germany's prestigious Wacken Open Air Festival, earlier that same year. By this stage in their storied, if frequently troubled career, the tireless New York thrashers had endured more than their share of professional setbacks (poor sales and unsuccessful attempts at reinventing their sound) and personal dramas (none larger than singer Bobby `Blitz' Ellsworth's on-stage stroke five years prior) -- certainly enough to recognize their musical strengths. And their strengths lay in producing old-school, hard-nosed, thrash metal, and then delivering it with surprising energy on European festival stages, where Overkill's historical significance was ironically much more appreciated than in their own homeland. Both of these prerequisites are satisfied here, even though Immortalis packed no songs that one might consider certified Overkill classics; just a solid number of memorable ones; and the group's tight, 50-minute greatest-hits set at Wacken boasted absolutely no fireworks, nor DVD extras to speak of. As such, their pooled forces still amount to nothing more than a super-fan's keepsake, -- despite the addition of three live audio bonus cuts to the mix. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
