Bob Marley numbered Steel Pulse among his favorite reggae bands back when the UK group had just come up out of Birmingham in 1974. A quarter-century down the road, Steel Pulse still sounded great, playing reggae in an earnest, intense way befitting of Marley's musical inheritors. The ensemble's muscular reggae leaned heavily on the rhythm section of Ronnie McQueen's seemingly bottomless bass and the understated syncopation of drummer Colin Gabbidon, with the group harmonies, guitars and keys floating above. A best-of in the best sense of the phrase, 20TH CENTURY MASTERS has such extraordinary Steel Pulse tunes as "Drug Squad," "Ku Klux Klan," "Sound System," and "Taxi Driver" in all their lean, powerful, rocking glory. This collection of 12 classic tunes makes for a great introduction to this amazing reggae group, and not a bad entry point to the whole genre for the uninitiated.
