At the time of his death in 1980, Jacob Miller was establishing a musical foundation of controversial, socially conscious lyrics that documented the struggles of Jamaica's underclass. Along with Bob Marley, who ironically died a year later, he represented the powerful spirit of oppressed people who refuse to accept injustice. Miller's clear, sweet, echoing voice highlighted tunes that painted familiar scenes of life in Jamaica's ghettos. His songs, such as "Tenement Yard" and "All Night Till Day Light," surpassed even Marley's in terms of Jamaican popularity. As lead singer of Inner Circle, he expanded his repertoire to include music that wasn't totally reggae, but was soulful just the same. His death from a car crash turned him into a legend, and Chapter a Day illustrates exactly why. This is a stunning tribute album that reveals both Miller's talent and the loving influence he's had on today's reggae stars. A two-CD set, Chapter a Day provides sublime remixes featuring stars such as Luciano, Freddie McGregor, and Tony Rebel, while the second disc showcases the singer's hits as a solo star and with Inner Circle. Standouts include "Westbound Train," with McGregor silkily harmonizing with Miller's vocals, urging him to "say hello to Peter, Bob and the crew," and a show-stopping live performance of "Discipline Child," which accents the power of Miller's voice and message. Chapter a Day is an absolute must-have for all reggae fans. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates
