In the 1980s and '90s, Zydeco music had a new found popularity thanks to artists like Stanley Dural Jr. -- aka Buckwheat Zydeco and C.J. Chenier. Much like Chenier's father, Clifton (the king of Zydeco) brought the music to new audiences by fusing it with rock & roll, C.J. Chenier and Dural combined it with elements of funk and soul. That brings us to little L'il Brian: for his 1995 debut album he took this idea one step further by adding elements of hip-hop into the mix. This fusion is most evident on the track "FuNKABLUeSaDeCo," where he demonstrates that's he's just as adept at rhyming as he is at accordion playing. To show that he knows his roots there are instrumental tracks and even a few tunes that lean closer to Cajun sounds. With a little luck in the coming years, L'il Brian's style of music could turn yet another generation of fans onto the Zydeco sound. ~ Curtis Zimmermann
