Arguably the most popular and influential Jamaican artist since Bob Marley, Buju Banton first gained international exposure riding the crest of the early-`90s dancehall explosion. Tiring of that scene's reliance on typically "slack" lyrics concerning graphic sexuality and gun-talk, he soon adopted a roots-influenced return to live instrumentation and Rastafarian themes. In a move to expand his artistic reach as well as develop new artists, Buju later set up his own label, Gargamel. JAMROCK CLASSICS VOL. 1 is a selection of classic riddims voiced by rising and established stars of dancehall reggae.
