While this is hardly the first collection of live Steel Pulse material, it's often the live recordings where this legendary reggae band shines brightest. This is especially true of latter-day Steel Pulse, as some of the group's later studio recordings tended toward commerciality and overproduction. Not so on LIVING LEGACY. These tracks, recorded at three separate late-'90s performances, are full of the vibrance that made the Birmingham band such a phenomenon in the '80s. The group's Marley-inspired sound is full of the same dichotomies that produced such appealing artistic tension in Marley's own work. Jubilance and utopianism mix with harsh political realities and social protest. But Selwyn Hinds' voice is as invitingly sweet as ever, and the band's facility and highly textured approach to arrangement are consistent with Steel Pulse's classic recordings from 15 years earlier.
