Before Barrington Levy conquered the dancehall in the late '80s with an inimitable string of hits (including the herb-smoking anthem "Under Mi Sensi"), he ruled the proto dancehall "rub-a-style" on his early albums for the U.K. imprint Greensleeves. ROBIN HOOD, originally released in 1980, is a masterful set of late-period roots-reggae from the production/backing group powerhouse of Henry "Junjo" Lawes and Roots Radics. Featuring Levy's distinctive yodel-like vocalizations alongside deep, melodic bass grooves, the album sets the tone for the next decade of dancehall deejays, from melodic sing-jays to gruff-voiced ragamuffin stylists.

  • Critic Reviews
Q (Magazine) (p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] Levy's righteous warbling riding the diamond-hard rhythms -- courtesy of the ever-steady Roots Radics band -- in fine style to him one of his biggest sellers."
