Chris Murphy, ex-INXS manager, founded his Petrol Records in 2001, and after a good deal of iTunes success with an assortment of international salsa and reggaeton tracks, signed a distribution agreement with EMI, releasing on disc a series of themed samplers, including this one, which presents a dozen contemporary reggae tracks. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot here to e-mail home about, and even the best cuts, like Sugar Minott's "King of Kings," are only moderately interesting. The lead track, Noiseshaper's version of Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting," will probably draw the most attention, but the decision to slow the song down and tackle it at half speed probably wasn't a good one, since it robs the song of its quirky verve and forces the lyrics to carry far more than ever intended. ~ Steve Leggett
