Having real Jamaican reggae artists cover the faux-reggae-pop of the Police is a great gimmick, but the value of this compilation rests in the pure musical richness contained therein, rather than the ha-ha factor. To hear Cyril Neville's spine-tingling take on "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is to hear this haunting song again for the first time. Likewise Horace Andy's rendition of "Invisible Sun," which reveals new depths of both sorrow and uplifting radiance. Though not a reggae artist, Joan Osborne sounds game and thoroughly convincing on a version of "Every Breath You Take" that redeems the over-exposed song and takes it to new places. Part of the proceeds of this delightful tribute album goes to an international youth services program.

Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.48) - "Inner Circle produced this project and plays on much of the album, shuffling between modern reggae, dancehall and roots styles....SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD is pretty damn solid overall..."
