A Mi San Antonio is the debut album from the diva of conjunto, Eva Ybarra. Before she became a mainstay of conjunto compilations and solo recordings on the market, she was a fringe performer in San Antonio, and the music hails from this era. The accordion is used to its fullest in melody, with variations off the polka abounding plentifully. There isn't as much embellishment in the solos as there is in more recent recordings, but there's enough to hint at Ybarra's abilities. The sounds are rarely as exciting as, say, the Jimenez family, but they're still enjoyable dances. The lyrical content is essentially based in old styles of Mexican poetry, which works well for the format. Instrumentally, the real innovations are in small changes in chord progressions and tempos from where one would generally expect the musician to travel. The album doesn't really hold any specific highlights, but presents a solid front of quality work. Nothing terribly flashy, but nothing particularly poorly performed, either. Ybarra is one of the newer performers on the Tejano scene, and this album is a proper introduction to her stylings. Give it a listen or two and compare to the other mainstays of the circuit. ~ Adam Greenberg
