EAGLE CRIES is one of the most satisfying releases from composer, singer, songwriter, and Native American political activist Joanne Shenanadoah. Like most of Shenandoah's works, EAGLE CRIES concerns itself with Iroquois themes, legends, and history, acting as a kind of lovely, inadvertent guidebook to the Iroquois culture. But EAGLE CRIES is unified by a gentle, folky sound, and while many of the melodies and lyrics draw from Iroquois tradition, the songs will also appeal to fans of contemporary folk and pop.
Guest appearances from Neil Young, Bill Miller, and Bruce Cockburn (on the moody "One Silver One Gold," an album highlight) further enhance the sound and status of EAGLE CRIES. A winning combination of elements makes this a compelling document that joins past to present, traditional folk to popular song, and the indignity of injustice to a deep, abiding sense of peace and beauty.
