Keola Beamer is renown in his native Hawaii as a performer, songwriter, and master of the slack key guitar. Beamer's popularity has increased in the U.S. since the Windham Hill label began releasing his records stateside in the 1990s. KA HIKINA O KA HAU, released on Windham Hill in 2007, finds Beamer experimenting by taking on classical material, including works by Satie, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Beamer overdubs layers of guitar (and receives some collaborative help from pianist George Winston) to make these impressionistic pieces. Those looking for Beamer's usual slack-key work will want to look elsewhere, but this is a bold, intriguing change of pace for the Hawaiian star.
