Flautist Scott Cunningham, who records under the moniker Golana (taken from the Cherokee for raven), creates graceful, soothing flute music augmented by synthesizer, guitar, and various other instruments. As on Cunningham's other albums, LONE PINE CANYON finds the artist melding traditional Native American music with the atmospheres and textures of New Age and relaxation music, creating an effect that is evocative and soothing at once.
But LONE PINE CANYON is even more layered that Cunningham's other releases. This is due in large part to the tasteful string arrangements that couch Cunningham's wistful melodies. On "Cerro Noroeste," for example, deepens as Cunningham's flute and an intimately recorded acoustic guitar are surrounded by the quiet build of violins. Treatments of two pieces by Rachmaninoff put the strings to further good use. But it is the use of a small ensemble of voices--they appear throughout the album-- that really distinguishes this release, giving an earthy, human dimension to Cunningham's reflective, spiritual airs.
