This single disc compilation collects songs by many legends of traditional folk and blues whose lyrics concern grisly murders and other crimes. From lover killing (Bascom Lamar Lunsford's "Banks of the Ohio" and Ethel Water's "Miss Otis Regrets") to frontier justice (Woody Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd") to presidential assassination (Kelly Harrell and the Virginia String Band's "Charles Giteau"), crimes large and small are covered here in the lively and often wry narrative style of early classic folk and blues artists. While the decades, artists, and genres covered are quite disparate, the collection reaffirms folk and blues's place in the darker parts of the early popular imagination long before the Sopranos and slasher movies took over.

  • Critic Reviews
Record Collector (magazine) (pp.104-105) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Righteous have brought together a collection of loosely themed songs held together by their sheer individual greatness. It's tongue in one cheek, whiskey in the other, an enduring mix of irony and hardship."
