Recorded live at Teatro Nuovo, Dogana, Republic Of San Marino on October 28-30, 1997. Includes liner notes by Caetano Veloso.
The 1997 concert documented on this disc came about due to a letter sent to Brazilian songpoet Caetano Veloso by the sister of Federico Fellini, who'd heard Veloso's "Giulietta Masina," an ode to Fellini's wife and the star of his films. Maddalena Fellini was also aware of Veloso's often-professed deep love for Fellini's work. Thus, the singer found himself in Rimini, peforming a program of songs all related in one way or another to his lifelong love affair with the cinematic magic of Fellini and Masina.
Utilizing only the spare accompaniment of a small band, Veloso enchants with his tender, silky voice as he delivers a series of wistful songs full of nostalgia for the youthful days that found him enchanted with Fellini's films. A few of the songs here are Veloso's own compositions, including (naturally) the softly longing ballad "Giulietta Masina." Elsewher, Veloso adapts Nino Rota's themes from Fellini films ("Gelsomina") and performs the work of other composers whose songs he associates with the time during which he was first struck by Fellini and Masina (Jobim's chestnut "Chega de Saudade," the Waldemar Reis-associated "Nada"). The overall effect is a melding of Brazilian and Italian sensibilities and an overwhelming feeling of "saudade," the kind of bittersweet sadness Veloso personifies in his heartfelt performances here.

  • Critic Reviews
The Wire (3/00, p.63) - "...This is Veloso's ultra-mellow love letter to film director Federico Fellini and Giuletta Masina. Veloso's velvety vocal chords are caressed by a quartet of strings and drums..."
    CMJ (10/1/01, p.22) - "...A glorious labor of love..."
JazzTimes (12/01, p.118) - "...Both a departure from his musical flow and a validation of his fundamental artistry..."
