PAPA'S DREAM was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Musical Album For Children.
PAPA'S DREAM is a children's album, a spicy one with a South-Of-The-Border feel.
Children's albums fall into several categories. There are those filled with lullabies, those with educational songs, those with popular songs. PAPA'S DREAM falls into the best category of all...songs that are fun.
A spoken narrative ties the songs together, and provides an ethnic background to the adventure that ensues. Narrator Lalo Guerrero brings the story to Mexico, providing the band with the opportunity to dig into that rich musical culture with bilingual tracks in Tex-Mex musical styles.
Culling from favorite novelty songs, Los Lobos reinvents "La Bamba" as a bold, sassy opener, and follows with other golden oldies. What kid wouldn't go wild for Los Lobos' catchy rendition of the forever rambunctious "Wooly Bully"? The one thing to consider is how to get the record away from mom and dad, and back into the hands of the kids.
Critic Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (2/17/95, p.58) - "...This is a kids' record parents won't mind hearing. While toddlers will enjoy the story of a balloon trip, David Hidalgo's smooth vocals and confident versions of rock classics like `La Bamba' don't condescend..." - Rating: B+
