This album commemorates the second encounter between Ivan Lins and the Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Vince Mendoza. Lins is of course one of Brazil's most admired composers, particularly by jazz aficionados, author of standards such as " "Comear de Novo" or "Madalena." The Dutch Metropole Orchestra is an institution in European jazz, a big band that since 1945 has been backing up artists such as Oleta Adams, Charles Aznavour, Shirley Bassey, Pat Metheny, Tony Bennett, Stan Getz, or Dionne Warwick, among many others. Lins and the Metropole Orchestra performed together for the first time in 2006, and once more in July 2008. This CD is a recording of the second concert, released by the superb Brazilian label Biscoito Fino. The 70-plus orchestra is further augmented by guitarist Leonardo Amuedo, and singers Paulo de Carvalho (also author of the only song not written by Lins) and Trijntje Oosterhuis. Most selections were arranged by conductor Vince Mendoza, who lovingly fleshes out the melodic and harmonic richness of Lins' universe, never overdoing or revamping things for the sake of it but, rather, always respecting the intrinsic sentimental, intimate nature of his music. Granted, there is no shortage of Lins live albums or compilations available. Still, one has yet to find a single one that is anything less than splendid, and Regncia Victor Mendoza is far from being an exception. Highly recommended for Brazilian music and vocal jazz lovers. ~ Mariano Prunes
