The 1970s were the golden age for salsa, the New York-based style that brought together Latin music and made it cool. This compilation harks back to that time, with big names like Machito and Fruko (whose "Fruko a Lo Compadre" smokes). If it just did that, it would make a fine primer, but by digging a little deeper, this disc offers a fuller picture of salsa -- a style that remains perennially popular. So, alongside a Louie Ramirez there's Orquesta Dee Jay, whose "Dona Paula" shows that they should have been much better known. Overall, it's the kind of record that could convert unbelievers to the salsa cause, with all tracks the crme de la crme, firing on all cylinders and that percolating salsa groove, and with some sparkling brass work. It captures a time when salsa was still fresh, the bands often wildly inventive and willing to try new things. ~ Chris Nickson
