Son de Madera hail from the Mexican state of Veracruz, a vast region that streches along the Gulf Coast, and play son jarocha music, a highly rhythmic folk form played on an eight-stringed, guitar-like instrument called the jarana jarocha. The form was first recorded in the early '30s and, though it borrows from Spanish, Cuban, and North Mexican folk styles, the percussive playing style of the most virtuosic jarana players lends the music a distinctive flavor.
