Singer Shafqat Ali Khan, a member of the venerable Sufi qawwali tradition, turns in a fascinating world-fusion record with SUBLIME SUFI. Like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Salamat Ali Khan (Shafqat's father), Shafqat is a qawwal of great precision, exuberance, and passion. His looping, elastic vocals adhere to the qawwali tradition, but the instrumentation here is quite experimental for an album of Sufi music.
While tablas and flutes make expected appearances, keyboards, drum machines, a saxophone, and electric guitars can also be heard. There is a distinctive, bass-heavy pulse that recalls Western electronic club music, and the combination is intriguing, infectious, and often danceable. Open-minded fans of Sufi devotional music will want to hear this exciting merger between ancient Eastern and modern Western traditions.
